During your Open Evening visit endeavour to:
Ask for and look at the school's published Special Educational Needs and Inclusion Policies

Establish who is the Special Educational Needs Co-Coordinator (SENCO)
Enquire about staffing, equipment, facilities and time allocated to supporting children with SEN

Enquire about the school's commitment to drawing support from outside specialist agencies

Enquire about IEPs, their implementation and review - how information is shared between different departments and staff

Average class size, particularly in Year 7, may be an important factor in supporting your child

Enquire about any extra learning support, other assistants available to children, especially in Year 7

Enquire about Pastoral, Tutor, Pupil Welfare systems within the school and how Life-skills and Personal Social Education are fostered and taught

Enquire about Homework Policies, if there are any homework clubs and if your child experiences difficulties if there is any extra support offered

Enquire about 'Partnership with Parents' policies, if there is a homework diary/contact book available for parents and teachers to keep in contact

Enquire about Parents' Evenings and if there is an active Parent/Teacher Association
Enquire about feedback systems to parents in respect of your child's progress, are these solely reliant on Parent's Evenings or are there End of Term reports, are internal and external test results shared with parents at other times during the academic year?

If your child has a Statement of Special Educational Need: it is important to not only discuss all of the above at the Open Evening but to also seek to extra information:

An early 'Statement' review, in your child's Year5/6 in primary school, should take place so that you are able to state your preferred Secondary School well in advance of Secondary Allocation. Please refer to Code of Practice 5:66
It is important to remain aware of the need to keep to timetables for the completion of all transfer forms
You should be thinking about possible schools as early as the end of Year 5 for a child who has a Statement of Special Educational Needs
Croydon's Special Educational Needs Team is based in Taberner House on telephone number: 020 8686 4433. Ask for the "SEN Dept" and keep in close contact with them during your child's Year 6.
