Approaching School Meetings and Reviews successfully

Hopefully, you will encounter a positive approach and general courtesy from all members of staff when you are invited to attend reviews at your child's school, whether this is for an Individual Education Plan review or for a Statement review. However, sometimes parents/carers may feel that their child is being unduly criticised or that the 'best' is not being done for them in terms of educational support/provision.

Try to remain factual and practical at all times during these meetings… keep notes and take a partner or an informed friend with you if you anticipate that there may be some disagreements or difficulties.

Prepare in advance, by making lists of your concerns and, if applicable, any areas that you are pleased about also include the views of your child
Suggest any practical/feasible ideas that you consider may help support your child
Approach the discussions in a positive and constructive way
After the meeting, write, confirming what you believe has been agreed so that there can be no misunderstandings - keep a copy of all correspondence

After the meeting, if your child has not been present, feed back any positive comments to your child

Ask any questions as necessary

A Positive Approach:

Reviewing Individual Education Plans (IEPs):

Ideally, IEPs should be continually kept 'under review' and in such circumstances there cannot simply be a 'fixed term' or a formal meeting for reviews. However, IEPs should be reviewed regularly, ideally at least three times a year. Reviews need not be unduly formal, but parents' views on the child's progress should be sought, and they should be consulted as part of the review process. Further advice on IEPs and on involving pupils can be found in the SEN Toolkit - available from:
